PTA President Susanna Carey called the meeting to order at 7:05 pm.


PTA President’s Report:

Susanna introduced members of the executive committee and PTA teacher representatives.


Minutes from the last meeting: The June 9, 2014 PTA minutes were approved with no corrections or changes.


Vice President Erica Jones thanked everyone on behalf of Charles Barrett Kids Care for the backpack donations; all of our students started the year prepared. Thanks to Catherine Miller and committee, the After School Enrichment program has 221 students enrolled in 17 classes. The activity bus is now running smoothly.


Amy Poe – PTA membership is over 200 members right now. Forms will go in green folders tomorrow. The class with the highest percentage of PTA membership will be rewarded with CBES car magnets and the opportunity to duct tape Mr. Kennard to the wall.


Chalin Smith – Every Wednesday in October is a “Walk to School Day.” The class with the highest percentage of participation will receive the “Golden Shoe” award.


President-Elect/Reflections Co-Chair Anna Jaeger discussed the PTA-sponsored Reflections art competition. “Reflections Art Night” is next Wednesday, October 15, 5:30-7:30pm in the cafeteria. PTA will provide supplies to create a visual arts piece and help students complete entry forms. Email kateknysh@gmail.com for entry forms or more information. Deadline is Oct 24.


The Innisbrook deadline is Oct 10. As of today we have sold $4,876; the goal is $12,000.



Christine Hollins discussed saving Box Tops – the first deadline is Oct 20; Jill Anderson discussed Giant and Harris Teeter grocery store rewards and the Target Red Card. More information here: http://www.acps.k12.va.us/barrett/fundraisers.php


PTA Treasurer’s Report:

Purvi Sittner (2013-2014 Treasurer) presented the 2013-2014 Audit Report (see attachment). Jill Anderson moved to approve the report. Christine Thayer seconded. All were in favor; none opposed. The 2013-2014 Audit Report was approved.


Co-Treasurer Nancy Butler, Co-Treasurer Nicole Crochet, and Purvi Sittner presented the 2014-2015 PTA Budget (see attachment). Chalin Smith moved to approve the budget. Jerica Webber seconded. All were in favor; none opposed. The 2014-2015 PTA Budget was approved.


Christine Thayer and Purvi Sittner discussed the Fall Appeal, “From Your Heart to the Barrett Cart,” which funds the bulk of the PTA budget. The goal is 100% participation. 36/262 families have donated so far. Contributions are tax-deductible and can be made by check or online at www.tinyurl.com/CBAPPEAL. Various teacher representatives talked about the PTA money that goes to use in classrooms – teacher supplies, instruments, mini-grants, and more.


Committee members addressed a parent concern regarding the success of the Innisbrook and whether fundraisers are evaluated. The Executive Committee continuously assesses the value of various fundraisers, with the Fall Appeal being the main focus. Member inputs are always welcome.


School board liaison Bill Campbell introduced himself and discussed: lights at the TC Williams football field, the new addition of Dr. Crawley as Superintendent, the middle school reconsolidation, and school uniforms in some ACPS schools. Everyone is invited to meetings to discuss the new Strategic Plan; more information here: http://www.acps.k12.va.us/board/strategic-plan/.


Principal’s Report

Mr. Kennard delivered his “State of the School” address. He discussed student performance data, 2013-2014 scores, student reading levels, the new 3rd grade building addition scheduled for next summer, SOL pass rates, Response to Intervention and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, and school peer comparability charts. CETA (Changing Education Through the Arts) Night is October 29th at 6:30 pm.
