Welcome:

PTA President Susanna Carey called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm.

 

PTA President’s Report:

Minutes from the last meeting: The October 6, 2014 PTA minutes were approved with no corrections or changes.

 

President Susanna Carey announced that the PTA recently awarded Teacher Mini-Grants. With 20+ applications, the Fall Appeal funded many teacher requests for classroom items including iPads, ELL and math fluency tools, and more.

 

The PTA Membership contest ended today; results will be announced soon. The winning classroom(s) will have the opportunity to duct tape Mr. Kennard to the wall.

 

Walk-to-School Wednesdays in October were very successful; thank you to Chalin Smith for her coordination efforts.

 

We sold $6,332 during the Innisbrook fundraiser, well short of the $12,000 goal. This gap makes the Fall Appeal even more critical for funding our programs.

 

Reflections Art Night was very successful with the Living Legends of Alexandria. Ten times more children entered the contest this year than last. Winners will be announced soon. Thanks to Anna Jaeger and Kate Knysh for their work on Reflections.

 

The classroom Harvest Parties were great; thank you to Room Parents and volunteers.

 

The Student Directory will be delivered tomorrow. Thanks to Jenny Curry and Melanie Davis.

 

Heritage Night is Friday, November 14, 6:30-8:00 pm. The evening will celebrate Central America and the Caribbean. The Farm-to-Table lunch this Thursday will feature kale and sweet potatoes harvested by students, from our gardens.

 

The Barrett Bazaar date has changed; it will be held on May 9, 2015, which is Mother’s Day weekend.

 

PTA Treasurer’s Report: Nicole Crochet presented the November Report (see attached).

 

Fundraising:

Christine Thayer and Purvi Sittner discussed the Fall Appeal. This is the final week. The goal is 100% participation, and we are only at 40%. Last year 150 families donated, and only 100 have donated so far this year. The kindergarten families have done well with participation. Every child at Barrett benefits from the Fall Appeal; we have to raise $25,000 in order to fully fund all our programs. Contributions are tax-deductible and can be made by check or online at www.tinyurl.com/CBAPPEAL.

 

Christine Hollins announced we met our fall Box Tops goal, earning $542.80. Keep collecting the Box Tops and sending them in to the school!

 

Jill Anderson gave an update on Giant and Harris Teeter grocery store rewards and the Target Red Card. Previously we had 31 members signed up for Harris Teeter; now we have 51. We had 13 signed up for Giant; now we have 23. Target Red Card increased from 23 to 24. Please sign up and link your cards. These passive fundraisers raise money that is sent directly to the school (it does not pass through the PTA or factor into the PTA budget). Featured Speakers:

Krishna Levya gave a presentation on the Family and Community Engagement Center (FACE). The goal of the organization is to facilitate positive relationships and parental engagement and provide learning and enrichment opportunities. Reading Specialists Sarah Harrison, Katherine Brown and Paulette Jones gave a presentation regarding their services: reading interventions, small group support, classroom support, one-on-one teaching, helping teachers with planning and literacy resources, helping with reading assessments throughout the year, and maintaining the Book Room with leveled books.

 

Math Interventionist Car Del Fratte gave a presentation regarding math services: co-teaching, co-planning, small groups intervention, and implementing the PTA-funded “Dream Grant” for a math closet stocked with games to help increase math fact fluency.

 

School Counselor Susan Price discussed her services: monthly classroom visits to address specific topics like bullying and disability awareness; addressing specific issues at the invitation of teachers, like conflict resolution and independence; meeting with small groups at lunch to work on social skills; coordinating for standardized tests; co-chairing the volunteer effort with Ana Bonilla, and more.

 

Social Worker Ana Bonilla discussed her many roles: she runs the mentoring program, parent groups, and small groups; she handles special education evaluations, crisis interventions and assessments, attendance referrals, and home visits when needed. She also coordinates kids funds for coats, school supplies, holiday meals, and scholarships for after-school programs, which she refers to as “great equalizers.”

 

School Nurse Petra Ramirez talked about her duties: providing first aid; ensuring compliance with immunizations, records, and physicals; providing hearing and vision screenings; and helping children obtain glasses and hearing aids.

 

Assistant Principal Nancy Ritter gave a presentation on the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program. (Please see the attached presentation.) Teachers Mya Akin and Liz Stanczyk discussed TAG writing and TAG math units.

Principal’s Report:

Mr. Kennard announced the 2-hour delay tomorrow. He advised a school construction project meeting is scheduled for November 13 at 7:00 pm in the auditorium; the architect will give a presentation.

 

PTA Council President Cindy Martinez announced that Superintendent Dr. Crawley and the School Board are looking for parent feedback regarding the school budget. A roundtable forum will be held on November 12, 7:00 – 8:30 pm at TC Williams High School. Please attend; we would like to have Charles Barrett representation.
