PTA President Susanna Carey called the meeting to order at 7:04 pm.


PTA President’s Report:

Minutes from the last meeting: The February 2, 2015 PTA minutes were approved with no corrections or changes.


Principal’s Report:

Mr. Kennard announced the School Board has approved the contract for construction of the new Barrett classrooms. Construction is slated to begin the day after school lets out and be completed before school begins in the fall. The fire alarm system will be serviced concurrently. The outdoor drainage issue near the kindergarten pod will be addressed in the future.

Stephanie Smith, Director of Counseling, George Washington Middle School

Mr. Mazur and Ms. Smith gave a presentation on the structure of GW, including academic programs, additional course offerings, intervention programs, and sports offerings. You can find contact and calendar information, including information regarding Walk-Through Tuesdays here: Mr. Mazur said the transition combining GW1 and GW2 into one school is going smoothly.


Chris Phillips, Principal, Jefferson Houston K-8

Mr. Phillips discussed the middle school classes (6,7,8) at Jefferson Houston, which are held separately on the third floor of the new building. He discussed the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (more here: His goal for the school is full accreditation within one year. You can find contact and more information here: Mr. Phillips invited parents and students to visit the school any time.


PTA Treasurer’s Report: Nancy Butler presented the February Report (see attached).  We are on budget in all categories.



PTA President’s Report (continued):

Bridget Koury moved to elect Nancy Butler, Bess Flick, and KK McCart to serve on the nominating committee. Ronké Hughes seconded the motion. All were in favor; none opposed.


The nominating committee will nominate members for the following 2015-16 Executive Committee positions: President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The nominating committee will present the slate of officers at the April PTA meeting. We will vote on the slate at the June meeting.

Cindy Martinez announced the talent show, the Panda Extravaganza, will take place this Friday, March 6. Act 1 (K-2) will take place from 6:30-7:15 pm. Pizza, water bottles, Girl Scout cookies, and flowers will be on sale during a 30-minute intermission. Act 2 (3-5) will take place from approximately 7:45-9:00 pm.   Volunteers are still needed. Bridget Koury announced the Barrett Bazaar, our annual PTA-sponsored children’s carnival, will take place Saturday, May 9, 3:00-6:00 pm. The committee will email out a Sign Up Genius for volunteers. To celebrate Mother’s Day weekend, children will be able to make crafts as gifts. The committee needs help with planning games (this is not a big commitment).
