PTA President’s Report:

Minutes from the last meeting: The January 12, 2015 PTA minutes were approved with no corrections or changes.

Susanna Carey discussed National PTA’s Take Your Family to School Week (TYFTSW), February 16-20, 2015. Charles Barrett is the recipient of a $1,000 grant for TYFTSW. Events include our first-ever Gallery Night and Reflections Awards on February 20, 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Math Night will be held on February 19, 6:30 – 7:30 pm.

If you are interested in serving on the nominating committee to nominate officers for next year’s PTA Executive Committee, or if you would like to serve on a standing committee next year, please email Susanna at cbptapresident@gmail.com.

Principal’s Report:

Mr. Kennard discussed the redesign of the Kennedy Center’s CETA (Changing Education Through the Arts) program; the program is changing from fifteen schools to just five. Charles Barrett is re-applying and working hard to continue with CETA. Mr. Kennard will send out information on the ListServ if you or your child would like to write a letter of support.

The school board is on track for a February 5th meeting to approve construction of the new Barrett classrooms. Construction is slated to begin when school is out. The new addition will not change enrollment at Barrett.

Featured Speakers:

Richard Groot, Assistant Director of Health, Safety and Risk Management, ACPS

Jamie Bartlett, Coordinator of Security Emergency Operations, ACPS

Mr. Groot and Mr. Bartlett introduced themselves and described their positions. They addressed questions regarding numerous topics, including lockdowns and lock-ins (more information here: http://www.acps.k12.va.us/emergency/guidelines.pdf), risk management, security, health and safety programs, physical access between recreation centers and adjacent schools, moisture intrusion, and rodent control. You can email them any time with questions:

Martha Walsh, Technology Integration Specialist, ACPS

Ms. Walsh showed a video illustrating iPad integration in the classroom at other ACPS elementary schools. Ipad integration at all levels enhances curriculum in many areas: math, literacy, handwriting, learning about money, using publishing applications and more. Charles Barrett is the only ACPS elementary school without an iPad cart.

PTA Treasurer’s Report: Nancy Butler presented the January Report (see attached).  We are on budget with a current balance of $47, 617.

Two budget proposals:

  1. Allocate $500 for fifth grade Girl Scouts Garden Project. The troop gave a presentation to the executive committee regarding plans for renovating Barrett’s existing butterfly garden. The plan includes some donated supplies and plans to obtain butterflies, houses, paints, varnish, and more. The girls are developing a plan for ongoing care of the garden. Ms. Wines noted the butterfly garden is also a fit for second grade curriculum.

Jill Anderson moved to vote on budgeting $500 for the Girl Scouts Garden Project. Michelle Brayman seconded the motion. All were in favor; none opposed.

  1. Allocate $3,200 from Fall Appeal overage and $2,700 from the Reserve Fund toward the purchase of an iPad cart, iPads, MacBook Air, and iPad covers for the school.

Jill Anderson moved to vote on budgeting for the iPad cart purchase as described above. Alexis Stackhouse seconded the motion. All were in favor; none opposed.
