Susanna Carey announced Walking Wednesdays were a success despite the weather. Thank you to Chalin Smith! Thank you to the Scholastic Book Fair chairs (Laura Devereux and Daniela Spigai) and to all who volunteered and shopped at the book fair. The fair was a big success and raised a significant amount to benefit the school library. Los Tios CB Restaurant Social – thank you to all who dined out or in to benefit CB! We raised $400 for the CBPTA. Additional money from the December CB Giving Tree was used to purchase food as Spring Break Gifts for CB families in need. PTA President’s Report (continued):

Susanna Carey discussed advocating for full funding of the budget.

PLEASE advocate for the school system with city council. The proposed city allotment to ACPS leaves the school district’s budget for the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) short by $3.3 million this year. If this is the final level of funding, the school board may have to cut multiple non capacity-related school projects (including the storm water drainage issues and other maintenance at Barrett).

You can contact the city council to express your support for increasing the CIP budget to ACPS. Council has already voted not to increase the tax rate in the city, so money is extremely tight. Call or write to your city council representatives using this link: http://request.alexandriava.gov/CCC/#tab=Find&keyword=city%20council&service=CNC_GROUP

The school’s combined funds (operating) budget is also being underfunded by $3.2 million this year. Do you like those math and reading specialists we have? Your child’s relatively small class sizes? Having an assistant principal? All of these things and more will be at risk across the school district if the city does not close this gap in funding.

Now is the time to contact city council. Only about 13% of Alexandria households have children in the school system. Decisions and votes are coming up at the end of April/beginning of May, so write a note or make a call NOW.
